ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The subject statistics is being taught in Arts, Science, Bio-science and Commerce at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The Department runs a regular course of B.A./B.Sc. (Statistics) under the semester system. The main aim of the department is on the enhancement of knowledge of the students about the subject in particular and their overall development in general. For this purpose, various academic activities of small duration have been conducted by the department in the form of seminars on specific topics of the subject and quiz competitions so that students may learn more and be benefitted to improve their skill. Members of Department also attend workshops, conferences/ seminars to update themselves in the subject.

- Department of Statistics, G.G.D.S.D. College, Sector-32, Chandigarh organized a National Seminar on “An Insight into Actuarial Science” on 23rd October, 2021. Dr Ram Niwas, Head Department of statistics, G.G.D.S.D. College welcomed the Resource Person Prof. Kanchan K. Jain, Department of Statistics, Panjab University, Chandigarh and the participants of the Seminar. The seminar wad attended by under graduate, post graduate students and faculty members from various institutions through google meet and live you tube streaming. Esteemed Prof. Kanchan K. Jain highlighted the concept of Actuarial Science, its importance and applications in various sectors of statistics with the help of different practical examples. She discussed where actuaries work, different institutes of actuaries in India as well as abroad and examination route of actuaries. She also explained different types of risk and insurance policies for individuals. The seminar was concluded with vote of thanks by Dr. Ram Niwas, Head Department of Statistics, G.G.D.S.D College, Chandigarh. The seminar was attended by our faculty members, students, researchers and faculty members from different colleges, universities and research institutions.
- Department of Statistics organized a Statistics Quiz Competition for BA/BSC-2nd and 3rd Year students of Department of Statistics, G.G.D.S.D. College, Sector-32, Chandigarh on April 25, 2022 at Mini Auditorium. Principal, Dr Ajay Sharma and Dr. Sajeev Soni, Dean of Sciences & IT, G.G.D.S.D. College, Sector-32, Chandigarh motivated the students and participants for the Quiz. After the completion of the quiz, the trophies and certificates were given to the winner and runner-up teams by Dr. Ram Niwas, HOD, Statistics. Also, all the participants were given certificate of participation. The event was concluded with vote of thanks by Mrs. Anuradha Aggarwal, Faculty, Department of Statistics, G.G.D.S.D College, Chandigarh. The event was attended by our faculty members and students.
- 2. On December 24, 2020 a National Seminar on “Statistics and its Applications” was organized by the Department of Statistics, G.G.D.S.D. College, Sector-32, Chandigarh. Dr Balraj Thapar, Principal, G.G.D.S.D. College welcomed the Resource Person Prof. Kalpana K. Mahajan, Department of Statistics, Panjab University, Chandigarh and the participants of the Seminar. Under graduate, post graduate students, Ph.D. scholars and faculty members from various institutions attended the seminar through google meet and live you tube streaming. Esteemed Prof. Kalpana K. Mahajan highlighted the importance and the applications of Statistics in various sectors with the help of different practical examples. She discussed about testing of hypothesis, different measures of scale and different small sample tests for testing the significance of difference of the quantitative data. She also explained about how we can use different types of tools and techniques of Statistics for various types of problems or data. The National seminar was concluded with vote of thanks by Dr. Ram Niwas, Head Department of Statistics, G.G.D.S.D College, Chandigarh. The National seminar was attended by our faculty members, students, researchers and faculty members from different colleges, universities and research institutions.li>
- Department of Statistics organized a Statistics Quiz Competition for BA/BSC-III Year students of Department of Statistics, GGDSD College, Chandigarh on 13th June, 2021. After the completion of the quiz, the cash prizes were given to the winners of the quiz completion by Dr. Ram Niwas, HOD, Statistics.
