About the Department

Department of Botany at GGDSD College was established in 1979 with the introduction of Prep and Pre-Medical Classes. It was elevated to UG Course in 1984. Add-on Course in Environmental Auditing was introduced in 2002 under career oriented scheme of UGC, which successfully continued till 2015. Presently Semester system is being followed, which was introduced from the session 2014-15 by Panjab University, Chandigarh. Faculty of the department is also involved in teaching of B. Voc(Agri-Business and Agrarian Entrepreneurship) since the session 2015-16.

1 Plant Diversity I Major/DSC 1 Semester 40 Student must have passed 10+2 examination with at least 35% marks in aggregate of the qualifying examination and has studied any science subject from recognized board. Student must have passed 10+2 examination with English as one of the subjects. This paper forms the basis of advanced study in Botany.
The students will be having the knowledge about the different forms of the non-vascular plants. A systematic study of algae, fungi, and bryophytes with the structural differentiation and heterotrophic and autotrophic modes of nutrition in the plant kingdom. 
2 Plant Diversity II Major/DSC 1 Semester 40 The students will have knowledge about  various higher life forms of the plant kingdom. A sequential study ranging from Pteridophytes – the first vascular land plants to gymnosperms, enabling the students to have a broad perspective of evolutionary trends in the plant kingdom.
3 Organic Farming SEC-1 1 Semester 40 Pass in class 12th The students shall be able to apply the acquired operational and technical knowledge to select and apply basic methods, tools and information in the field of organic farming and sustainable development.
4 Basic Lab and Field Skills in Botany* SEC-1 1 Semester 40 Pass in class 12th The graduates will be having knowledge and skill learning on various aspects of plant diversity, herbarium studies, and tissue culture techniques.
5 Biofertilizers SEC-2 1 Semester 40 Pass in class 12th To provide knowledge about the plant resources as growth promoters and fertilizers.
6 Plants- Importance and Propagation* MDSC-1 1 Semester 40 Pass in class 12th The course aims  to familiarize students with the importance of plants for sustenance of our planet in general and mankind in particular. The students will be able to have knowledge about different modes of plant reproduction – Sexual (through seeds) and Asexual (without seeds).
7 Utilization and Conservation of Plants* MDSC-2 1 Semester 40 Pass in class 12th The students will be having knowledge about origin of plants, their civilization, utilization and extinction and conservation.
8 Environment Science (ENVVAC) VAC 1 Semester 40 Pass in class 12th The graduates would be able to demonstrate the acquisition of and ability to apply the knowledge, skills and values required to take appropriate actions to promote sustainable development and mitigating the effects of environmental degradation, climate change, and pollution and would help in effective conservation of biological diversity, management of biological resources and forest and wildlife conservation.
