Department of English came into existence with the inception of GGDSD College i.e. 1973. The Masters in English and English Honours programs have been a preferred platforms for a variety of career options, besides higher pursuits in the domain of English Literature.

INFRASTRUCTURE
  • Library: The library is a host to hundreds of books related to English language and literature for the development of literary thought in the students and faculty members. It is constantly updated as per the needs and the list of books provided by the department. Number of Books – 4155 Number of Journals/Periodicals Subscribed to – 108
  • Internet facilities for Staff & Students: The campus is Wi-fi enabled. There are adequate internet facilities and a digital library. ICT enabled teaching is used supplement the lecture method. Sufficient supplementary e-resources and reading material such as books, research journals and magazines of all kinds are provided in the library to enhance teaching and learning. Department Activities / Events

The English Literary Society remains active throughout the year. Guest Lectures,debates, declamations, quiz competitions, creative writing on interdisciplinary themes make up the calendar. The department’s annual inter-college fest remains the most awaited event.

  • English Literary Club, GGDSD College conducted an inter-college Sonnet Writing competition on 25 September 2021. The winners were awarded cash prizes.
  • The English Literary Club conducted its online recruitment drive called ‘Metamorphosis’ from 20-24 September 2021. 250 members registered for the club.
  • The English Literary Club Conducted an Inter-College Poetry Slam Competition on 30 October 2021 on the theme “Sorry, not Sorry”. The winners were awarded cash prizes.
  • 20 Sept. 2021 – Metamorphosis: The online recruitment drive of the English Literary Club was conducted.
  • 25 Sept. 2021 – An online inter-college Sonnet Writing competition was held. The winners were awarded cash prizes.

  • 7 April 2022 – The English Literary Club of GGDSD College organized a conversation with Ashish Khetarpal, an Indian author based in France, wherein, is book ‘Pushing Gods Out’ was discussed.
  • 27-28 May 2022 – A two day creative writing workshop was conducted by Prof. Deepti Gupta, senior professor at the Department of English and Cultural Studies, Panjab University. The workshop comprised of 8 sessions and many renowned authors from Chandigarh namely Mr. Khushwant Singh, Mr. Vivek Atray, Mrs. Alka Kansra Mr. Jatin Salwan were invited to interact with the students of the college.
  • International Lecture series on Shakespeare titled “Unravelling the Bard: Through Global Perspectives” 15 April-20 April, 2021.The English Literary Club of GGDSD College, Chandigarh successfully concluded its five-day-long international Lecture series “Unravelling the Bard: Through Global Perspectives” from 15 April 2021 to 20 April 2021, that hosted the brilliant Professors and scholars of English from around the world namely Dr. Michael Saenger (Southwestern University), Dr. Katherine Gillen (Texas A&M University), Dr. Vivek Sachdeva (GGSIP University, New Delhi), Andrew James Hartley (Robinson Professor of Shakespeare Studies, UK) and David Lee Miller (University of South Carolina).
  • Creative Writing Workshop from 20-29 AprilThe English Literary Club of GGDSD College, Chandigarh successfully conducted the virtual creative writing workshop for students of M.A. English from April 20 to 29 convened by the effusive and scholarly, Professor Deepti Gupta, Department of English and cultural studies, Panjab University. The workshop focused on building a deeper understanding and exploration of the nuances of creative writing through collaborative writing sessions, recital of poetry and prose, and interaction with established names in the world of literature.
  • International Lecture series on Shakespeare Part II titled “Unravelling the Bard: Through Global Perspectives” 19 May-25 May, 2021The English Literary Club of GGDSD College, Chandigarh successfully concluded its second five-day-long international Lecture series “Unravelling the Bard: Through Global Perspectives – Part 2” from 19 May 2021 to 25 May 2021.The lecture series hosted brilliant Professors and scholars of English Literature from around the world namely Dr. Ronan Paterson (Teesside University, England), Dr. Carla Della Gatta (Florida State University), Dr. Anthony Guy Patricia (Concord University in Athens, USA), Dr. Kimberly Anne Coles (University of Maryland, US) and Dr. Thea Buckley (Queen’s University, Ireland).
  • International Seminar series by Prof. Satya P. MohantyThe English Literary Club of GGDSD College, Chandigarh successfully concluded its seminar series “Pitfalls of Postmodernist Theory and How to Avoid Then” on 1 June, 8 June, 15 June and 22nd June 2021. The seminar series was held online and featured Professor Satya P. Mohanty, a stalwart of English literary theory and an accomplished Translator, who teaches at New York’s Cornell University.
  • Metamorphosis – Sonnet Writing Competition – The English Literary Club of GGDSD College, Chandigarh convened the first full-body online meeting for the session 2020-21 on October 28, 2020, at 3 pm. The meeting was hit off on an introductory note by Ms. Poorva Trikha, the teacher-in-charge of the Club. The members were intimated about the topic of discussion: “The House of Asterion” by Jorge Luis Borges, an Argentine postmodernist writer. This was followed by a warm introduction by the newly elected Board for this tenure in the following order: President-Abhishek, Vice President- Ameesha, Secretary- Valentina, Editor-in-Chief- Parneet, Technical Head- Shobit, and last but not the least Graphic Designer- Aryan. The House of Asterion” has one crucial post-modernist feature i.e., “the tendency to draw the reader’s attention to his or her process of interpretation as s/he reads the text” which reflected in each Board member’s articulation on the said theme. The underlying themes, that of hope, existential crisis, solitude, labyrinth, loneliness, and a plethora of other intellectually stimulating ideas kindled a fire of questions and answers. An Inter college sonnet Writing Competition was conducted by the Club on 28 October 2020. The entries were received online. The results of the same were declared at the end of the meeting.
  • Rückenfigur – The English Literary Club on the 20th of November, 2020 discussed the essay “Against Interpretation” by the American critic Susan Sontag. Members of the club put forth their views on what Sontag says in her essay that “Interpretation is the revenge of the intellect upon art” and if excessive interpretation really ends up destroying a work of art.The members also touched upon interpretation being an involuntary action, and how academic efforts on interpretation are not completely redundant as they can help us interpret our own experiences in life.The discussion ended with Mr. Pranav Kapil declaring the results of the International Photography Competition based on the theme of Ruckenfigur, an art form which invites the viewer to look at the scene from the perspective of the subject in the photograph.
  • Muse Ink. – The English Literary Club of GGDSD college, Chandigarh hosted its most awaited event: “Muse Ink”, an ice-breaking session on December 14, 2020. Despite staging the session online, the members of the literary community found themselves closer to each other than before.The event was kicked off on a thoughtful note by the moderator, Valentina who reflected upon the dilemma which plagues every speaker when lauded with the freedom to talk without any thematic constraints. From there on, the whole community geared itself for an intellectually stimulating and emotionally riveting journey; navigating carefully through the dangerous waters of Orwell’s 1984; basking on the golden beaches of Faiz Ahmed Faiz’s poetry; occasionally stepping on the ledge to hear the echo of their voices and gliding swiftly into the land of a hand- spun version of some thought-provoking mainstream poetry.The English Literary Club reached new levels by facilitating harmonious transaction of ideas and emotions amongst the young enthusiasts. Mrs. Poorva Trikha’s and Ameesha’s heart-warming rendition of hindi and urdu poetry stole the evening. The event was wrapped up by Abhishek, President ELC who presented a token of gratitude to all present for their sincerest efforts.
  • Story Writing Competition – An Intra-college story writing competition giving its winner “The Hemingway Prize” was held on 19 December 2020 by the English Literary Club in association with Asia Book House, Sector 17, Chandigarh. Students from all streams participated in the competition. Both the winners shared the Hemingway Prize and will get 500 Rs Each, sponsored by the Asia Book Store. The runner up of the competition was Arsheen Parmar, BA III. She got a gift coupon of 500 rs redeemable at Asia Book store.

  • Metamorphosis – The recruitments for the official English Literary Club – GGDSD College were concluded on 10th August, buoyantly under the guidance of Ms. Poorva Trikha and Mr. Pranav Kapil along with the President of the club – Ms. Shivangi Ahuja. The recruitments witnessed 80 applications from the lovers of art and literature, all thanks to the ranks of eager applicants and old members (who ensured that there were no hitches along the ride).The club provides its members an opportunity to explore the prospects of acquiring proficiency in literature along with many other skills which will help them in every walk of life.
  • Nimbus – The English Literary Club of GGDSD College, on 9th September’19, opened its doors to some curious minds, with an aim to go beyond the ordinary and dip a little in to the intellectual waters with ‘Nimbus’. The meeting was centred around the ideas discussed in Walter Benjamin’s masterpiece ‘The Work Of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction’. Ms. Poorva Trikha, the teacher in-charge gave a presentation on the essay and discussed some critical points. Mr. Pranav Kapil also delivered a lecture on the Marxist ideas referred to in the essay. The presentations were followed by a discussion which paved a way for the inquisitive minds to pour in their thoughts on the much neglected yet topical subject
  • Literati 1.0 – A Creative Writing Workshop: “All our musings, however amusing, are lifeless until we crisply sew together the imperfect ideas into a perfect living human.” Imagination is the key to all things beautiful and being able to express one’s thoughts freely is a gift. Literati 1.0- a Creative Writing workshop, was organised by the Literary Club on 12th September. The workshop was conducted by Mr. Pranav Kapil, Assistant Professor in English at GGDSD College, Chandigarh. It was all about helping the young minds unleash the creative side of their minds and enabling them to think beyond their ordinary horizons. 80 students from different streams attended the workshop. The very essence of this workshop was to make people realise how a poem or story starts speaking for itself as if it were a human if structured properly.
  • Debate Competition On “Integrity: A Way Of Life” – The English Literary Club of GGDSD College, Sector 32, Chandigarh, in association with Central Bank of India observed the Vigilance Week on 31st October, 2019 and conducted a debate competition for the same. The theme of the debate was “Integrity: a way of life” and the participants had to defend or argue against the motion, “The life of integrity is an obsolete notion”. 9 teams competed against each other in a profound and gracious manner. The event was graced by the honourable presence of Shri Manoj Kumar Meena ,IPS UT cadre, Batch 2012 who is currently working as SP vigilance, Sh Deepak Yadav, OSD vigilance Cadre, DANIPS Batch 2010 and other high ranking officials from Central Bank of India. In the end, the winners were announced and trophies were handed to them by the esteemed chief guests, accompanied by the honourable principal Dr. Balraj Thapar. The day concluded with high tea for all the members and officials.
  • Academic Writing Workshop – The English Literary Club of GGDSD College, Sector 32, Chandigarh organized an Academic Writing Workshop on November 13, 2019. The workshop was conducted by Mr. Andrew Golden, English Language fellow, U.S. Department of State. The Principal, Mr. Balraj Thapar, gave a very warm welcome to the guest speaker who has over 17 years of experience in education, having taught primarily in Japan and other Southeast Asian countries. 200 students participated in the workshop and enthusiastically attempted the writing exercises. The aim of the workshop was to imbibe in the students the importance of proper structure, referencing and quality in their academic writing, which will help them convincingly present their argument in an academic setting. Mr. Golden conducted a very richly informative workshop which exposed the students to the ways of writing a five paragraph essay which is bound to help them in their academic writing endeavours. The participants learnt and wrote in the five paragraph essay structure and then peer reviewed them for improvement in their writing skills.
  • Inter College Literary Fest – IRA 2020 – Ira: an inter-college literary fest was organized by the English Literary Club, GGDSD College, Chandigarh in association with S.P.E.A.K. Society for Promotion of Ethical and Affordable Health Care on 17 February 2020. The theme of the fest was “Physical & Mental Health”. The event had participants from 8 colleges in the tri-city and they fervently participated in 4 different competitions. The competitions were Turncoat (a form of debate in which participants had to switch sides), Rubatosis: The unsettling awareness of your own heartbeat (Poetry Recitation), Reverse a Tale (Story writing) and Meme Making. The topics for the competitions were all related to health. The competitions were followed by Human Library which was an interactive session wherein people who didn’t know one another came together for a meaningful conversation. The event featured the distribution of Breather Magazine by its founder Mrs. Kamaljeet who also apprised the students about her magazine.
  • Metamorphosis – The Recruitments -The recruitments for the English Literary Club – GGDSD College were concluded on August 31, 2017. The recruitments witnessed 90 eager applicants from various streams. The screening of members was done on the basis of their responses to the questions in recruitment questionnaire and personal interviews conducted by the teacher in-charge and the Board Members
  • Screening King Lear – The English Literary Club screened the film King Lear based on the play of same name by William Shakespeare on September 13, 2017. Released in 2008, directed by Trevor Nunn, starring Ian McKellen as King Lear, the film was screened for the students of M.A. English who discussed and reviewed the film after watching.
  • Our Lives’ In-equality – The second event of the club was held on September 14, 2017 and was titled “Our Lives’ In-equality”. The aim of the event was to make the members of the club recognize the (unconsciously prevalent) gender-based inequalities in the society and present to them a more egalitarian perspective. The members of the club discussed feminist ideas contained in the works of Simone de Beauvoir and Hélène Cixous. Before the discussion by members began, the teacher-in-charge and the Board Members of the club, made presentations on ‘What is Feminism?’, ‘Waves of Feminism’, ‘Neo-feminism and Social Media’ and ‘Role of Men in Promoting Equality’.
  • Muse-Ink. – The English Literary Club of GGDSD College, Sector 32C, Chandigarh organized a Poetry Slam & Poetry Recitation competition on the myriad, yet engaging themes of Realism and Romanticism on October 25th, in the Mini-Auditorium of the college. The event started at 1:30 pm, in absolute zest & zeal. The event incepted with a Poetry Recitation Competition, in which a few of the club members displayed their recitation skills. The emotion of the poets was evident in their words and expressions. After a brief ice-breaking session, the event entered into its second phase, which incubated the much-awaited Poetry Slam Competition. All the winners were awarded a Certificate of Appreciation and a round of applause, which served as a great source of motivation to the poetic minds. All the winners were decided by a democratic polling in which the audience was asked to cast their vote for the best participant.
  • Guest Lecture by Prof. Shelley Walia – A guest lecture by Prof. Shelley Walia was organised by The English Literary club on the afternoon of November 15, 2017. The topic of the lecture was ‘Art and Resistance in Modern Times’, during which a very spirited Prof. Shelley Walia talked about nationalism, role of language, barriers to unity, importance of having opinions and voicing them in the right way, all woven together with a colossal storehouse of quotes and anecdotes from history, sprinkled with his own opinions and presenting the whole thing as a delicacy to the audience, pleasing to both their minds and ears. He strongly propagated, “It’s only after we give up our nationalism, language and racism, that one reaches up to a level of exile, where no one can influence other’s opinions, and no one has the power to drag them in a different way that they intend to, and that is how, we can keep our imagination pure, and free from bias.”He concluded the lecture by encouraging the audience to have opinions and to raise them, and also to respect the opinions of others, in order to live in harmony and dignity. The session indeed turned out to be a perfect intermingling of knowledge and art.
  • Mental Health and Its Relationship with Creativity Amongst Writers & Other Prominent Figures – The English Literary Club of GGDSD College organized an event on ‘Mental Health and Its Relationship with Creativity Amongst Writers & Other Prominent Figures’ for its members on February 9, 2018. The event was organised with the view to discuss the impact of mental heath on creativity and to break the social stigma, which hampers the society to talk about the same. A great emphasis was laid on putting a stop on romanticizing mental illness. Amongst the writers being discussed were Sylvia Plath, Edgar Allan Poe and Virginia Woolf, and how their life, their works were affected by their mental health.
