ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

    The Department of History, established in 1973, is one of the oldest departments of the college and was started as an undergraduate programme. The Department caters to all streams including Commerce, Science and Arts. Apart from teaching History and Culture of Punjab as compulsory subject and History as elective subject, it also offers Honours Programme in History. The dedicated and conscientious faculty has adopted a pupil centric approach and enriches the learning process by engaging the students in various community oriented programmes. Regular field trips and visits to various museums are arranged to inculcate in the students respect for heritage. The department has successfully created an amalgam of traditional heritage with the impulsions of modernity and has been constantly engaged in research activities and publications.

INFRASTRUCTURE
  • College library has a wide collection of more than 2015 books
  • They are based on the history, culture, pre-history and archaeology
  • In addition to this, the college has INFLIBNET connection from UGC, New Delhi, through which the students can access online national and international journals and research materials.
  • There are 20,266 e-books of History available through e-shodh sindhu
  • The EBSCO Academic collection provides 2, 26,014 e-books out of which there are 38,385 e-books related to history
  • Information Communication Technology (ICT) is of great help for the students and teachers
Departmental Activities
  • The Oral History Competition was organized on 7th October, 2022 for the students on the theme, ‘Unsung Heroes of India’. It drew a large number of students who participated with enthusiasm to give voice to the hidden heroes of Indian History. The jury of the event were Dr. Richa Gaind and Dr. Payal.
  • One day educational visit to the National Museum, New Delhi was organized on 8th October, 2022. The students under the guidance of Dr. M. Pramod and Dr. Sunita Panigrahy gained a firsthand experience of the different artefacts displaced at the museum.
  • The Department had organized a one day National Seminar on the theme, ‘New Perspectives of the history of India: Socio-Cultural, Geo-Political and Economic Aspects’. This seminar was sponsored by College Development Council (CDC), Panjab University and was held on 22nd February, 2023. The seminar was attended by 50 participants. The first session was chaired by Prof. N.K. Ojha, Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology and Prof. R. K Sharma, Panjab University. The second session was chaired by Prof. Benudhar Patra, Department of History, P.G.G. College, Sector 11, Chandigarh.
  • An annual event called Bioscope was organized on 24th March, 2023. Bioscope is a blend of history and cinema. Through it the film The Tashkent Files was screened. After the movie the platform was open for discussion and interaction based on the movie and its historicity.
  • ICSSR sponsored one day National Seminar was organized on the theme, New Perspectives in the History of India: Continuity and Change on 27th May, 2023. A large gathering of research scholars and faculty members participated in the seminar from various Universities all over the country.
  • A talk was organized on the topic, “History of Indian Constitution” by Prof. Anil Kumar and Prof. Devinder Singh, SVC and Chairperson, Department of Laws, Panjab University, Chandigarh.
  • A webinar titled ‘Legacy of Freedom and Partition’ was organized, wherein Prof. Sucheta Mahajan, Centre for Historical Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi shared her thoughts on the theme.
  • A talk by the famous author and journalist Mr. Anuj Dhar on the topic ‘Solving the mystery behind the disappearance of Subhas Chandra Bose’. The Chief Guest of the event was Dr. Priyatosh Sharma (Senator & Chairperson, Department of History, P.U.).
  • A one day educational trip to Rakhigarhi, the largest Harappan site in India.
  • A Webinar titled ‘Honour Killing and its social implications’ was organized. The very renowned historian Prof. Anju Suri, Department of History, Panjab University, Chandigarh was the speaker at the event.
  • A Declamation competition was organized on the topic ‘Online Teaching: A bliss or a bane’. Dr. Anil kumar Thakur , Department of Laws, P. U., Chandigarh and Mr. Sheetal Sethi, Department of Laws, Bombay University, Mumbai were the jury members of the event.
  • An online Counseling and Mentoring session was organized wherein Dr. Priyatosh Sharma, Chairperson, Department of History, Panjab University addressed the students and guided them for their future endeavors.
  • An educational trip to Agra, Fatehpur Sikri, Mathura and Delhi.
  • A Talk was organized on the Topic ‘Rethinking the Past: History in Career Building’ by Prof. Benudhar Patra, Post Graduate Government College, Sector- 11, Chandigarh.
  • Department of history organized an Inter-College Quiz competition on the ‘Contribution of Freedom fighters in the Indian National Movement’.
  • A documentary film on historical perspective of Harappan Civilization.
  • Historical visits to nearby Monuments, Museum, Art Gallery of Chandigarh.
  • An online Counseling and Mentoring session was organized wherein Dr. Paru Bal Sandhu, Chairperson, Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archeology, Panjab University addressed the students and guided them for their future endeavors.
  • One day field trip to Sanghol ( Punjab), an excavated site of Harappan culture has been conducted by the Department.
  • Students of History Department participated in History Quiz organized by DAV, Sector 10, Chandigarh.
  • A Documentary movie on the making of Constitution was shown to the students.
  • Students of History Department participated in History Quiz organized by PG Govt. College, Sector 11 and won second prize.
  • Students of History Department Visited Haryana Legislative Assembly alongwith the Department of Political Science.
  • A Documentary movie on the making of Constitution was shown to the students in collaboration with Department of Political Science.
  • National Seminar on ” Socio Economic Impact of Green Economy and Sustainable Development” was held in collaboration with Economics Department in the College on 12 February, 2015.
  • Students of History Department participated in History Quiz organized by M.C.M DAV College, Sector 36 and won second prize.
  • Students of History Department participated in the Declamation Contest by M.C.M DAV College, Sector 36 and place 2nd.
  • National Seminar was organized on the topic Violence, Memory and Identity’ in collaboration with the Department of Political Science and Sociology.
  • ICSSR Sponsored National Seminar on “Continuity of Harappan Culture in the Indian Historical Context ” was conducted by the Department of History in the college on 10th March 2014.
  • Students of History Department participated in History Quiz organized by DAV College, Sector 10, Chandigarh and won second prize.
  • Historical Trip was organized to Amritsar.
  • Seminar on “Domestic Violence” was organized in collaboration with the department of Political Science.
