ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The department of Journalism & Mass Communication was started in the year 2004-05. Since its inception the department is growing continuously adding new dimensions and setting higher standards in media education. The program provides students with the analytical, methodological and practical competencies necessary for pursuing journalism as a career. Students are given live assignments so that they acquire technical and professional skills in our state of the art studios.

  • The Department started Post Graduate Diploma in Mass Communication in the year 2004-05.
  • The Departement started career oriented Add-On Journalism Course in the year 2006-07.
  • Our college is the first and only one in Chandigarh to start with journalism as elective subject at a undergraduate level. Journalism as an Elective subject was introduced in the year 2008-09.
  • Career oriented Add-On Video Reporting course was started in the year 2009-10.
  • The B.Voc (Media and Entertainment) course was started in the year 2021-22.

Students of the department have Directed and Produced 8 documentaries
  • AST SE PEHLE The documentary got a Special Festival Mention at the Dada Saheb Phalke Film Festival held at New Delhi in 2017 .
  • BACHPAN SE PARE (On Human Trafficking) The documentary won ‘Official Laurel’ and ‘Special Selection’ awards at the 18th Calcutta International
  • BANDAGE The short film written and directed by a student of PGDMC was selected for the Popular Choice Award organised by Bacchpan Express, an online portal on Children Centric Journalism.
  • KUCH BHI HO SAKTA HAI a short film on Covid 19 made by the Harshwardhan Sharma student of journalism first year won Special Jury Appreciation Award at the inter college competition organised by Pushpa Gujral Science City out of about 700 films entries.
  • SISKIYAN: (On Cancer Belt of Malwa region of Punjab): Won First Prize in SOCH-2009 Media Fest organized by the School of Communication Studies, Panjab University Chandigarh. Won First Prize in film festival organized by ‘Punjab Virasat Foundation’ in 2009. It was screened at 1st Jaipur International Film Festival (JIFF), in January 2010. It was selected amongst 30 films out of total 150 entries from 8 Countries. It has won 3rd prize in 4th Haryana Film Festival and Film Appreciation Course, organized by DAV College for Girls, Yamunanagar.
  • PROMISES / VICCHORA (On Honour Killing):It was nominated at 3rd Jaipur International Film Festival (JIFF), in January 2012. It was selected amongst 144 films out of total 917 entries from 67 Countries. Won First Prize in SOCH-2011 Media Fest organized by the School of Communication Studies, Panjab University Chandigarh.
  • MRIG TRISHNA: (On Maqboolpura locality (known as village of widows) of Amritsar :Won First Prize in SOCH-2012 Media Fest organized by the School of Communication Studies, Panjab University Chandigarh. It was nominated at 3rd Jaipur International Film Festival (JIFF), in January 2012. It was selected amongst 144 films out of total 917 entries from 67 Countries. Adjudged Best Documentary in Indian Cine Film Festival Mumbai-2014
  • ANKAHI ANSUNI (On Lives of Marriage Band Players) :Adjudged Best Documentary in 3rd Bangalore Short Film Festival held at Bangalore. It was nominated at 7th Jaipur International Film Festival (JIFF), in January 2015. It was selected amongst 159 films out of total 1807 entries from 100+ Countries.
IN-HOUSE NEWSLETTER:

Department encourages and motivates the students to embellish their knowledge in Print-Media by taking up live projects in the lab. The In-House newsletter ‘EXPRESSIONS’ is published by using top of the line software QUARK XPress-7. It provides an excellent platform to bridge the Industry-Academia gap and prepare the students to emerge as fully trained Print Media professionals.

    Student Journalist Competition

    The Department held a Student Journalist Competition on World Photography Day on 19th August’ 2024. The themes were Atmanirbhar Bharat, Unity in Diversity, Our Culture Our Pride, Health and Wellness, Lifestyle and Environment, Travel Adventures, Urban Life: Cityscapes and Street Photography.

    Print Media Softwares Workshop

    The Department organised a workshop on print media professional design softwares InDesign and Quark XPress for the students. Mr. Naresh Makaniya, Sub Editor and Graphic Designer, Amar Ujala was the resource person on the occasion.

    Photography contest
    The Department organized a photography contest to celebrate World Photography Day. The contest themes were Make in India, Healthy India, Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao, Skill India, New India and Clean India Campaign.
    Talent Hunt with Radio Mirchi

    Radio Mirchi conducted a Talent Hunt at the college on 28th September 2022. Students of the department interacted with RJ Shankyy, Mirchi Vishal, Mirchi Abby and Mirchi Manisha. Eight students were shortlisted for the RJ Hunt.

    Student Video Journalist Competition.

    On the occasion of World Mental Health Day, the Audio Visual Club under the aegis of the Department organised the Student Video Journalist Competition on 10th October 2022. Students of the department submitted various videos on issues such as depression, technology addiction etc.

    Short Film Competition

    In October 2022, The Audio Visual Club under the aegis of the Department organised a short film competition on the theme ‘Local for Global, Vocal for Local’.

    Student photo journalist competition

    In October 2022, the VIBGYOR Club under the aegis of the Department organised a student photo journalist competition on the theme ‘Local for Global, Vocal for Local: Diwali Stories’.

    World Communicator’s Day

    On the occasion of World Communicator’s Day, the Young Communicators Club under the aegis of the Department facilitated Rajat Kamal National award winner Ojaswwee Sharma. His movie ‘Admitted’ was screened at the event. The Club President and Vice President were also chosen on the day and students were awarded prizes for photography and short film making competitions. The event was held on 20th October 2022.

    Prem Bhatia Lecture Series

    To celebrate National Press Day, the Department organised Prem Bhatia Lecture Series on 16th November, 2022. Mr Vipin Pubby. Former Resident Editor of The Indian Express was the Chief Guest on the occasion.

    Radio Message Competition

    The Department organized a Radio Message Competition on the theme ‘Radio and Peace’ on World Radio Day on 13 February’ 2023.

    Industrial visit to Radio Mirchi

    Around 25 students of the B. Vocational (Media &Entertainment) course visited Radio Mirchi 98.3 FM. The industrial visit was arranged by Puneet Ahluwalia ( Group Sales Head, Radio Mirchi). The primary goals of the tour were to familiarise students with territorial transmission, production, and airing of radio programmes, as well as the studio layout and administration of the radio station. RJ Anmol led students on tours of Radio Mirchi’s various departments.

    Interactive session with Senior Anchor Sayeed Ansari

    To sensitise students on the realities of journalistic practice, Department of Journalism and Mass Communication of Goswami Ganesh Dutta Sanatan Dharma College, Chandigarh organised an online interactive session with Senior Anchor and Executive Editor TV Today Network, Sayeed Ansari on 18th September 2021. The session was titled “Managing News and Life of a Journalist: Challenges and Opportunities”.

    Celebration of World Communicators Day

    The college in collaboration with Public Relations Council of India celebrated World Communicators Day on 28th September 2021. Dr. H.K. Bali, eminent cardiologist was the Chief Guest on the occasion and Sh. U.K. Sharma, President, GGDSD College Society was the Guest of Honour. The college signed an MoU with PRCI. The Youth Communicators Club was also inaugurated at the college.

    Workshop on Photo and Video Verification

    The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication of Goswami Ganesh Dutta Sanatan Dharma College, Chandigarh organised an online training session on ‘Photo and Video Verification’ on 23rd Oct 2021. Ms. Archana Kumari, certified Google Trainer and Assistant Professor, Department of Mass Communication and New Media, Central University of Jammu, was the resource person on the occasion. The workshop sensitised the students on the challenging issue of misinformation being spread today through photos and videos.

    Inauguration of TV & Radio studio

    The Department inaugurated its TV and Radio Studio on 26th October 2021. Mr. Rabindra Narayan, MD and President, PTC Network was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Mr. Nikhil Mishra, Vice President, Music and Movies, PTC was also present. The department also screened its documentary Ankahi Ansuni on the tough lives of band men and a docu-drama Promises on honour killing on the occasion.

    MoU with PRCI and inauguration of Young Communicators Club

    The college in collaboration with Public Relations Council of India celebrated World Communicators Day on 28th October 2021. Dr. H.K. Bali, eminent cardiologist was the Chief Guest on the occasion and Sh. U.K. Sharma, President, GGDSD College Society was the Guest of Honour. To bridge the industry academia-gap, the college signed an MoU with PRCI to provide students the opportunities in the field of Public Relations. The Youth Communicators Club was also inaugurated at the college.

    Press Day Celebration

    The Department celebrated World Press Day on 16th Nov 2021. Eminent Journalist Shekhar Gupta was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Mr. Gupta interacted with the students are answered various questions by the students regarding journalistic ethics and new trends in the industry.

    TV Production workshop

    A Workshop on ‘Innovative Aspects of TV News Production’ was conducted on 25 January 2022 by Ms. Sarabdeep Kaur, Senior Producer and Anchor, Chardikala Time TV.

    Awareness session with SD Vidya School

    To make students aware about the B.Voc Media and Entertainment Course, the Department conducted an online counselling session in SD Vidya School Ambala on 25th Feb 2022.

    Workshop on Social Media Audit

    The Department conducted a workshop on ‘Social Media Audit’ as part of Google News Initiative on 11th March 2022. Ms. Archna Kumari, certified Google Trainer and Assistant Professor, Department of Mass Communication and New Media, Central University of Jammu, was the resource person on the occasion.

    Session on ‘Designing Media Campaign Strategy’

    The Department organised an interactive session on ‘Designing Media Campaign Strategy’ in collaboration with Public Relations Council of India, Chandigarh Chapter on 30th March 2022. Students were apprised about PR tools that can be utilised to effectively drive media campaigns.

    Student Journalist Competition

    On 7th April 2022, on the occasion of World Health Day, the Department conducted a Student Journalist Competition and encouraged students to narrate visual stories on their personal lives during the Covid period.

    Workshop on Innovative Aspects of TV News Production

    To apprise the students about the latest trends in television industry, a workshop on Innovative Aspects of TV News Production was organised by the Department. Ms. Kanika Dua, AVP Sony Sab was the resource person on the occasion. The event was held on 16th April 2022.

    Industrial visit to Global Punjab TV

    The Department organised an industrial visit for B.Voc (Media & Entertainment) students to Global Punjab TV on 17th April 2022. Mr. Gaurav Walia, Managing Editor of News Channel, gave the students a tour around the news channel departments. He demonstrated the process of converting events, occurring in day-to-day life, into news stories for the public day.

    Career counselling session in Government Model School, Sector 23, Chandigarh

    The Department organised an awareness session on 12th May 2022 for the B.Voc (Media and Entertainment) course for the students of Government Model School, Sector 23, Chandigarh. Students were informed about the various careers they can pursue in the field of mass communication.

    Inter-school photography competition

    An inter-school photography competition was organised in April 2022 on the theme ‘Colours of Nature’. More than 100 entries were received on the theme.

    Industrial visit to The Unmute news channel

    The Department organised an industrial visit for Add on Video Reporting students to The Unmute news channel on 6th June 2022. Students were given an overview of news channel operations and production techniques. Mr. Harpeet Singh Kahlon, Sr. Executive Editor of the channel gave the students a guided tour of various departments.

    Celebration of National Press Day with Dr. Kiran Bedi

    To celebrate National Press Day, the Department of Journalism and Mass communication organised the 3rd Edition of Prem Bhatia Lecture Series on 16th November, 2020. Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry, Dr. Kiran Bedi was the Chief Guest on the occasion. The virtual event was livestreamed on YouTube and Facebook. Dr. Bedi apprised the students of the current media scenario including the harmful practices of sensationalism and fake news. She spoke about the need for the media to to work with greater responsibility in order to empower the youth. She also highlighted the various informational and educational functions of print, television and radio.

    Interactive session with India Today anchor Ms. Navjyot Randhawa

    The audio and visual club of the Department of Journalism and Mass communication, GGDSD College, Chandigarh organised an interactive virtual lecture on ‘Future Issues and Challenges in Media’ on 11th December 2020. Renowned news anchor, TV Today Network Ltd, Ms. Navjyot Randhawa was the resource person on the occasion. Ms. Randhawa emphasised the importance of balance and objectivity in news and the importance of skill development in aspiring journalists. She further emphasised the need to develop a sense of responsibility towards the news organisation as well as the country while disseminating news.

    Career counselling session held for Tricity students

    The Department organised an interactive online career counselling session on “Career Opportunities in Media and Entertainment Industry” on 15th June 2021. Media professionals RJ Ricky, My FM Harleen Minocha, Senior Journalist, Deccan Chronical and Naveen Sharma, Regional Technical Head, MyFM were the resources persons. Students were also informed about the introduction of the skill based B.Voc degree course in Media and Entertainment in the forthcoming 2021-22 session.

    Workshop on Digital Journalism :
    VIBGYOR Club, GGDSD College under the aegis of Department of Mass Communication and Journalism organised a workshop on the role and scope of digital journalism on the occasion of International Photography Day on August 19, 2019. The resource person on the occasion was Mr. Arvind Chhabra, State Correspondent, BBC. Professional Photographer and Filmmaker, Kshitiz Sharma, Head of Department of Journalism.
    Second Prem Bhatia lecture :
    To mark the occasion of National Press Day, the department hosted a lecture on ‘International Reporting: Terrorism, Repression and the Alternatives” on November 16, 2019. Mr. Mahendra Ved, President Commonwealth Journalists’ Association was the resource person. Mr. Ved spoke about the challenges faced by the criminal justice system in tackling terrorism. He spoke about the role the media plays in coverage of such events and the ethical guidelines regarding the same. The gathering fondly remembered the contribution of eminent journalist Mr. Prem Bhatia.
    Lecture on Internships :
    The Department of Journalism, GGDSD college conducted a workshop on the topic ‘Internships and Jobs in Journalism: Relevance, Scope and Need’ on February 4, 2020. Ms. Renu Sinha, Deputy News Editor and Bureau Incharge, The Tribune was the guest speaker at the event. Ms Sinha spoke at length about the career opportunities in the field of journalism. She apprised the students of the importance of internships at the graduation level and explained that the Industry readily welcomes freshers who have the required practical skills for the job.
    Workshop on Fact checking :
    The Department in association with Goggle News Initiative conducted a work shop on fact checking and fake news on 24th February, 2020. Ms. Archana Kumari, certified Google Trainer and Faculty at Central University, Jammu was the resource person. The workshop apprised the students of the need for verification of news as fake news was quite common these days.
  • Workshop on Filmmaking : The department organised a workshop on September 20, 2018. The resource person was Mr. Rahul Kashyap, Executive producer in Optimystix Entertainment India. The purpose of the workshop was to introduce the students to the world of professional film making. Mr. Kashyap shared his film-making experiences and challenges while working with various production houses. The workshop ended with an interactive session with the students.
  • First Prem Bhatia Lecture : The department launched the Prem Bhatia lecture series on November 26, 2018, where former war correspondent, noted author, and son of Late Mr. Prem Bhatia, Mr. Shyam Bhatia was the guest speaker. Speaking on the topic ‘Safety of Journalists: Covering Conflict and Sensitive Issues’, Mr. Shyam Bhatia narrated his journalistic experiences. The series was launched to commemorate Mr. Bhatia’s father who was an eminent journalist. The speaker shared insights from his highly coveted books on foreign affairs including, ’Bullets And Bylines: From The Front Lines Of Kabul, Delhi, Damascus And Beyond.’ He shared highly intimate details about his travels in war torn zones around the world, including Syria, Israel, Egypt and Pakistan, where he met many political incumbents, prime among them, Benazir Bhutto, with whom the speaker attended classes at Oxford University.   • Workshop on cinema : The Department organised a workshop in collaboration with the Toronto film school and New York Film Academy on February 2, 2019. Students were apprised of the scope of global cinema and the opportunities available
1. Visit to Doordarshan
  • The students of the department visited the Doordarshan Kendra, Chandigarh on 8 th November’ 2017 to participate in a live panel discussion on the topic ‘Effects of Social Media on Youth’. The panel members were Mr. Sanjeev Shukla, senior journalist, Dr. Madanjit Kaur Sahota, member of Child Welfare Committee, Chandigarh and Mr. Ganesh Dutt, IT expert.
2. Workshop on ‘Media Sensitisation on Social Issues’
  • On the occasion of National Press Day on 16 th November’ 2017, The Department of Journalism, organized a one-day workshop on ‘Media sensitisation on Social Issues’. Ms Paroma Bhattacharya, Media Head; Kailash Satyarthi Children’s Foundation was the resource person. The Department also released two issues of the Expression magazine on the occasion.
3. Film Making Workshop
  • The Photography Club under the aegis of the Department of Journalism conducted a two- day Film-Making workshop on 9 th and 10 th February’ 2018 in collaboration with Maya Academy of Advanced Cinematics. The resource persons on the occasion were Mr. Sandeep Sahota, Technical Head, Mr. Kapil Koshik, Senior Faculty, Editing and Mr. Ajay Kumar, Senior Faculty, VFX, Editing. Students were apprised of the various aspects of film making such as concept and theme creation, screen play writing, video making and editing.
  • The department of Journalism and Mass communication conducted a one day radio workshop on ‘Radio Jockey Skills’ on Wednesday, September 15th at GGDSD College. Popular radio jockey Manav from 94.3 My FM was invited as resource person. Manav demonstrated voice modulation techniques and gave students interesting and helpful tips to succeed in the field. The workshop aimed to promote an interest in Radio and Radio Jockeying. More than 100 students from the department were present for the workshop.
  • Students of department of journalism and Mass Communication visited the office of The Tribune on 22.09.2016 to understand the nuances of print media industry.
  • To celebrate National Press Day, the department organised a one-day photography workshop on the topic ‘Photojournalism vs Paparazzi: The Unethical Media Practices’. Mr. Manjit Singh, a senior photographer retired from PTI and Mr. Arpit Jaiswal, video journalist in NDTV were the resource persons on the occasion.
  • Students will be releasing the Expressions magazine.
  • The department will release a documentary on old age.

  • The department organised a workshop on radio jockeying skills on September 12, 2012. More than 100 students of Journalism, Functional English and Video Reporting participated. Mr. S.P. Singh, Director, Institute of Radio Jockeying, Chandigarh was the key speaker on the occasion. He explained that radio jockeying skills could help the youth in providing a better expression, good discussion ability and leadership qualities.   • The department organised a seminar on ‘Ethics in media and its social responsibility’ on Feb 2, 2013. The key speakers included Mr. Vivek Atray, Director, Harton; Dr. Archana R. Singh, Chairperson, School of Communication Studies, PU; and Mrs, Aruti Nayar, Chief Sub-Editor, The Tribune, Chandigarh. Mr. Atray advised the students to incorporate truth and accuracy in the news in order to maintain credibility. Dr. Singh apprised the students about how to draw a line between objectivity and subjectivity while reporting for print media.
