Current Socio-Legal Status of Minorities in India

The Department of Sociology, GGDSD College, Sector 32 Chandigarh organised a virtual talk on “Current Socio-Legal Status of Minorities in India” on the occasion of Minority Rights Day in India on December 18th, 2020. Mr. Mahavir Singh, Additional District and Sessions Judge cum Member Secretary, State Legal Services Authority, U.T. Chandigarh was the Chief Guest. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Mahavir Singh framed the issue of minority rights within the larger legal framework by discussing the types of minorities and their rights. He emphasised the importance of representation within a democracy and highlighted the provisions of the Constitution of India which exist for the protection of minorities, whether based on sex, caste, religion etc.Further, he highlighted the essential role of education in eradicating prejudices. He encouraged the students to reflect on ways in which they can promote equality and fraternity among their own networks and institutions. He pointed out the need for inclusivity and sensitivity in our social life, to counter the alienation and discrimination faced by various minorities. He also stated that this should be followed by concrete steps that value their contributions and provide equality of status and opportunities, which are the hallmarks of a democratic society.The talk was followed by a rewarding discussion between the students and the speaker. Earlier, Dr. Balraj Thapar, the Principal of GGDSD College, while welcoming the Chief Guest, emphasized the importance of the day. The insightful talk concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Mona Arora, Head of the Department of Sociology, GGDSD College.
