Interactive session held to mark World Sparrow Day

To spread awareness about the house sparrow, the Environment Society of Goswami Ganesh Dutta Sanatan Dharma College, Chandigarh organized a talk on ‘Bird Watching’. The resource person, Dr. Ravneet Kaur from Department of Zoology, Panjab University, Chandigarh held an interactive session to arouse curiosity about sparrows in the participants. Speaking on the theme of World Sparrow Dat -2021- “I Love Sparrows”, she highlighted how the increased pollution has been a threat to their population. Sparrows once were a common household bird and insignia of peace have been worse affected by human actions related to urbanization, industrialization and deforestation, which had lead to destruction of natural habitats. Different birds of Chandigarh, and how to proceed for bird watching were also a part of the webinar that caught the interest of participants. Several tips regarding water and food requirements, habitat and installation of bird feeders for conservation and protection of house sparrows and other related birds were shared on the occasion. The participants enjoyed the session that revolved around online games on bird watching. The NSS volunteers of the college along with their co-ordinators actively participated in the program and pledged to work for conservation of sparrows. About 95 students and faculty members participated in the talk organized through online platform.
